Shrink Plastic Charms: Make Custom Charms in Minutes (Beginner DIY)
Hi friend! Do you remember shrink plastic — those sheets you draw on, pop in the oven, and watch curl up into a tiny hard charm? It feels like magic every single time, and it is one of the easiest ways to make truly custom charms at home. Here is how to do it.

Why shrink plastic charms are so fun
Shrink plastic lets you make any charm you can draw. No special tools, no expensive supplies, and no guesswork. You draw it, you bake it, and in a few minutes you have a durable little charm for a keychain, zipper pull, or bag. Kids love it, beginners love it, and it is a perfect craft-night surprise.
What you’ll need
- Shrink plastic sheets (the frosted kind takes color the best).
- Permanent markers or colored pencils for your design.
- Scissors and a hole punch.
- An oven or toaster oven and a piece of parchment paper.
- Jump rings and a keychain, clasp, or cord to finish it.

How to make a shrink plastic charm
- Draw big. Your design shrinks to about one-third the size, so draw it two to three times bigger than you want the finished charm.
- Cut it out. Trim around your design, leaving a small border.
- Punch the hole first. Make your hanging hole before you bake, or you won’t be able to add it later.
- Bake and watch. Set it on parchment and bake at the temperature on your sheet’s package. It will curl, wrinkle, and then flatten as it shrinks. That part never gets old.
- Add a jump ring. Once it cools, pop in a jump ring and clip it onto a keychain or zipper.
Three cute charm ideas
1. The name or initial charm
Write a name or a single letter in bubble writing and color it in. It makes the fastest personalized gift.
2. Tiny food charms
Little fruits, a coffee cup, or a slice of cake read as adorable at charm size and are simple to draw.
3. A pet or favorite thing
Draw a simple version of a pet, a flower, or a hobby symbol. Simple shapes shrink down the cleanest.
Quick tips for perfect charms
- Rough up glossy sheets with fine sandpaper so color sticks.
- Colors get darker and brighter as they shrink, so go a little lighter than you think.
- If a charm curls and sticks, gently press it flat with a spatula right out of the oven.
